Online Services for Retirees

Antivirus software

Retirees are eligible for university-provided anti-virus software. See Virginia Tech's Anti-Virus Home page.

Credentials: PIDs

A Virginia Tech retiree may keep his or her PID with its associated password. Periodic renewals may be required in the future. The university's Acceptable Use of Information Systems of Virginia Tech apply to use of the PID. A PID represents the identity of the individual and should not be shared.

A retiree who does not have an assigned PID may request one using the Help Request Form or by calling (540) 231-HELP (4357).

Dial-up service: Virginia Tech Modem Pool

For a monthly fee and a one-time processing fee, a retiree may subscribe to the dial-up Virginia Tech Modem Pool to connect to the Internet. For sevice and information, see Modem Pool Access or CNS' Virginia Tech Modem Pool (VTMP) page. Sevice is limited to the Virginia Tech retiree; accounts should not be shared. Alternative local Internet service providers (ISPs) are available; for more information, see Local Internet Service Providers.

Connecting to the VT network carreies the responsibility of ensuring that one's computers are secure - that systems are patched and up-to-date, anti-virus definitions are current, and an Internet firewall is in place.

E-mail

A retiree may have a VT Mail ("@vt.edu") address. Periodic renewals may be required in the future. These accounts may be set to forward to any other account desired by the retiree. For instructions for forwarding, see Turning On or Off Forwarding From Your VT Mail Account.

Retirees are not eligible for Exchange e-mail and calendaring services. If you return to temporary re-employment with Virginia Tech, you become eligible for services as an employee. To archive your Exchange e-mail and retain copies of your messages, see Manually Archiving Messages in Outlook 2003/2007.

Support & Assistance

Support for services available to retirees include descriptions of services at computing.vt.edu, an online knowledge base of answers to many questions, and help desk support online at 4help.vt.edu or by phone at (540) 231-HELP (4357).

Hokie SPA

Hokie SPA (http://www.computing.vt.edu/classes_and_courseware/hokie_spa/index.html) access remains open to you. You can update your contact information, such as mailing address and telephone numbers, and you can view your academic record if you were also a student at Virginia Tech. If you have been a student, Hokie SPA is also your gateway to requesting official transcripts to be sent to you or to others you request and to register for additional courses.

Returning to part-time Virginia Tech employment? Taking a class? This list of services may expand when a retiree takes on other roles such as part-time employment or course enrollment.

If you have more questions, please send an e-mail to E-mail info.tech@vt.edu.
