VTAIX ID

VTAIX is the Virginia Tech Computing Center's general use UNIX system for the Virginia Tech community. Faculty and staff can run/write Fortran, MatLab, Rexx, SQLNet to Oracle databases or SAS programs. VTAIX also provides an Xedit or Uni-edit editors. Professors can use VTAIX to post class assignments or other messages and grant access to their students.

Getting a VTAIX ID

To request a VTAIX account, fill out the VTAIX USERID form. Once you have completed the form, your dean, director, or other authorized person will need to sign it and send it to Information Resource Management (IRM) using the address listed on the form.

VTAIX Passwords

Every VTAIX ID has a password associated with it. Your password ensures that no one other than you accesses your data. You should take care not to allow anyone else to know your password.

Changing Your VTAIX ID Password

It is recommended that you change your VTAIX ID password often to increase the security of your account. For instructions, see Changing Your VTAIX Password.

VTAIX Rules and Guidelines

  • Read and follow the Acceptable Use Policy
  • Choose a secure logon password, see Creating Strong Passwords for tips
  • Avoid use of '.rhosts' files to preserve intersystem security
  • Don't erase files indiscriminately, nor erase files whose names begin with a dot (.)
