Status of IMAP at Virginia Tech

Current Implications of Using IMAP

Connecting to the VT Mail server via IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) is currently available; however, you should be aware that the VT Mail server at present does not store e-mail messages beyond 32 days due to disk space issues. Typically, IMAP depends on the mail server to store messages and uses quotas to address disk space. This means, in the current VT Mail environment, that your e-mail will be deleted after 32 days with no recovery mechanism, unless you take action by using an e-mail client.

Actions You Must Take If You Use IMAP

  • If you do not want to forward your e-mail to another account or are unsure of how to save your e-mail in local folders, you should use the POP protocol instead of IMAP to connect to the VT Mail server. For instructions on how to configure your e-mail client to use POP, see the VT Mail page.
  • Configure your e-mail client to use IMAP (imap.vt.edu)

Timeline for IMAP at Virginia Tech

IMAP at Virginia Tech will be ready for general use when the quota system for disk storage space is in place. Once the quota system is fully established, both POP and IMAP will be viable options for general use for connecting to the VT Mail server. For more information on quotas, see the Quotas section of the VT Mail Mailbox Management page.
