Virginia Tech Junk Mail Headers

Following is a list of the junk mail headers and their meanings that the VT Mail servers use to identify potential unsolicited or unwanted e-mail, often known as "spam". These may help you refine your filtering scheme when configuring your e-mail client. These headers are based on the RFC standards for Internet Message Format. For more information, refer to RFC2822.

Note: Please be aware that the VT Mail servers automatically block as many as 6,000 and more Internet sites that have a history of sending large amounts of spam or viruses before they reach your computer. For a current list of these sites, refer to Blocked E-mail Sites.

If your server is being blocked, but not by Virginia Tech, go to the following Web pages to see if your server's IP address is listed. If so, follow the instructions on the Web page to be removed.

Contents

Status Header:

X-Junkmail-Status: score=0/50, host=steiner.cc.vt.edu
  • This header will be in every message that goes through the scanner.
  • A non-zero score does not mean that it is spam.
  • A score of over 50 means that it is probably spam.
  • The name in the host section will change, depending on which scanner the message hit. Possible values at the moment are: zidane, steiner, dagger, vivi.

UCE Header:

X-Junkmail: UCE(50)
  • Any message with a score of 50 or more will get this header. These messages are most likely spam. Messages with a score of less than 50 will not have this header.
  • The simplest filter would be to look for "X-Junkmail: UCE".
  • Messages with this header should be treated as spam.

Whitelisted Header:

X-Junkmail: Whitelisted
  • If this header exists, then the message originated on one of the very few computers in the whitelist, which are mostly campus servers that send lots of official notes. Whitelist space is extremely limited.
  • Messages with this header should probably not be treated as spam, even if the X-Junkmail: UCE header also exists.

Blacklisted Header:

X-Junkmail: Blacklisted black-listed ; black listed
