DNS Addresses

DNS (Domain Name Server) addresses are for the campus servers that translate the Virginia Tech domain names that your computer uses and converts them to IP addresses so that you can connect to the Internet.

Configuring Your Ethernet Connection:

To determine the address for the DNS server you should use, pick the two addresses you think are closest to you, based on the building. Hosts configured with DHCP get resolver configuration from the DHCP server.

CNS (Communications Network Services):

Suggested DNS resolvers to use for hosts with static configuration are:

ISB yardbird.cns.vt.edu 198.82.247.34 2001:468:c80:2101:0:100:0:22
CAS jeru.cns.vt.edu 198.82.247.66 2001:468:c80:4101:0:100:0:42
BUR milo.cns.vt.edu 198.82.247.98 2001:468:c80:6101:0:100:0:62

Active Directory (Hokies Domain):

Faculty and staff, if your computer is a member of the Hokies Domain, you should use the Active Directory DNS servers. If you are not sure, please refer to the appropriate article:

The Active Directory DNS addresses are:

  • 198.82.162.237 (threedog.w2k.vt.edu)
  • 198.82.145.6 (freeman.w2k.vt.edu)
