Telnet & SSH
People working on systems remotely often use Telnet or SSH, a secure form of telnet, to log on to a system and work as if they were sitting at the workstation. Telnet and SSH are most often used when interacting with UNIX systems, but are also used on other operating systems.
Telnet
Several Telnet clients are available which could be used, such as EWAN or the telnet which comes with Microsoft Windows Systems. Another option is TeraTerm which is a free telnet client which can be downloaded from:
ftp://riksun.riken.go.jp/pub/pc/misc/terminal/teraterm/
ftp://ftp.s.u-tokyo.ac.jp/PC/terminal/teraterm/
SSH
Most desktop operating systems (Windows, Mac OS, Linux) come with a telnet client, however these clients are rarely capable of SSH. There are a number of SSH clients to choose from. Students, faculty, and staff may refer to the SSH Communications Security Corporation non-commercial download site at Index of /pub/ssh. Faculty and staff may purchase SecureCRT from Departmental Software (http://www.ita.vt.edu/). Other examples of SSH clients include SSH Secure Shell for Windows and F-Secure's SSH for Windows or Macintosh.
