Saving Power While Using Monitor in Windows 2000/XP

Important: The following information may present problems with some brands of monitors. Articles cited at the end of this document provide guidance on how to reset your monitor in the event that problems occur.

If you would like to decrease the power used by your computer, thus decreasing pollution, acid rain, and similar environmental impacts as well as reducing your electric bill, you may wish to take advantage of some of the built-in power management functions in Windows 95/98/2000/Me/XP. Following are resources available to you through the Environmental Protection Agency (E.P.A.), the University of Pittsburgh, and Virginia Tech that offer instructions on how to enable power saving tools on your computer.

Energy Star

The federal government's E.P.A. is sponsoring a program called "Energy Star" that promotes understanding of environmental and economic issues in our everyday lifestyles. Energy Star's Power Management page offers details on power conservation while using your computer and an EZ Wizard Web Based Software Tool that enables power saving on your monitor in just a few steps.

University of Pittsburgh and Energy Star

The University of Pittsburgh is partnering with Energy Star to implement this energy saving program for its campus. On their Save Energy site, they offer explanations of the environmental and economical impact computers have, instructions on using Energy Star's EZ Wizard plus other energy saving tips, and links to other sites with more information.
