Understanding Freeware and Shareware

Freeware and shareware are both common sources of software and it is important to understand the differences between them.

Freeware:

Freeware is available for at no charge; however, much freeware is legally copyrighted, which means you are unable to either sell or distribute the product. Although a product is freeware, there may be fine print limiting the use of the product to either specific groups or specific applications. Be sure to read the license agreement carefully.

Shareware:

Shareware is software that you purchase, but oftentimes at a fraction of the cost of a comparable commercial product. You can often download and try shareware before you purchase it. Shareware software normally has an expiration date, after which time you need to purchase the software or discontinue use. Be aware that you may be required to pay yearly subscription fees to use certain shareware applications. Be sure to read the license agreement carefully.
