Surplus Data Removal Procedure
Important: All departments are responsible for ensuring that all computer hard drives are erased and free of all data and software.

Scholar
Scholar is Virginia Tech's implementation of Sakai, which is currently being developed and used at MIT, Stanford, Michigan and Indiana and many other universities. Scholar enables innovative ways to teach students, assess learning, and collaborate with users at Virginia Tech and beyond. With its capabilities of project site creation and resource sharing, Scholar consolidates the functions of a course management system like Blackboard with research and collaboration features, all coupled with enhanced ePortfolio capabilities.
Virginia Tech Search and Google
Virginia Tech is now using Google as its primary search engine. Some of the flexibility in maintaining the Virginia Tech site index was lost; however, the methods Google uses to return results and ranking are well worth it. Google rates relevancy based on how many sites are linked to your site. The more sites linking to your site, the higher up on the "hit list" your site will be. Metadata is still as important, Google uses the <meta name="description"> tag when building indexes and in result set listings.
Fileboxes for Organizations - Service Change Notice
Important: Formally, fileboxes were available to Virginia Tech organizations, however, we have moved all organizational fileboxes either to the Virginia Tech Web Hosting server or to a personal filebox. This was necessary because the Filebox service was orginally designed for personal Web hosting and organizational fileboxes are better served with the Web Hosting Service. You were sent an e-mail detailing these changes with information about how to access your content in its new location.

Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) Sample Report
The TSM backup client intitiates a backup session nightly for anyone subscribed to the service. The TSM service sends a status report through email every night stating the success or failure of the last backup session.
Failure messages referring to NTUSER.DAT and NTUSER.DAT.LOG files imply that a user was logged on to the computer during a backup attempt.

NAS Quotas
The term quota refers to a cap on the total amount of storage you can use in a NAS space. Quotas are helpful in planning for system upgrades and preventing over allocating space on the NAS server. Each new NAS space is set with a quota of 2.5 GB.
Network-Attached Storage (NAS)
Network Infrastructure and Services provides network-attached storage (NAS) spaces to Virginia Tech faculty and staff for individual and organizational use. NAS spaces provide a secure and reliable location to store files so that they are accessible from almost any computer. For example, copies of office documents and e-mail are good candidates for storage in a NAS space.
