Virginia Tech Instant Messaging Service

Virginia Tech Instant Messaging (VT IM) Service is an instant messaging service for Virginia Tech faculty and staff. The service provides a secure alternative to e-mail communication and enables two entities on the Internet to exchange messages essentially in real time.

Using VT Instant Messaging Service

VT IM is based on the open source Jabber protocol and can be accessed by most any Jabber client. A complete list of clients can be found on Jabber's Clients Web page. We recommend:

Platform Client(s)
Windows Pidgin, Psi
Mac Adium

When configuring your client, use the following settings:

Server/Host Name: im.vt.edu

User/User Name: [PID]@im.vt.edu
Note: Some clients simply ask for your Jabber ID, which is [PID]@im.vt.edu. In all cases, replace [PID] with your own PID.

Password: Use your PID password

Security: Use TLS encryption. If this is not available, use SSL encryption. If asked for a port number, enter 5222 or 5223.
